I am running Oracle 10g on Fedora Core 3.  I keep getting the same
error/trace file generated whenever I shutdown the database.  Has anybody
seen this before and know how to fix it?

ORA-01089 (See ORA-01089.ora-code.com): immediate shutdown in progress - no operations are permitted
ORA-00448 (See ORA-00448.ora-code.com): normal completion of background process
